Austria

Austrian wines are mostly dry white wines (often made from the Grüner Veltliner grape) with some luscious dessert wines made around the Neusiedler See. About 30% of the wines are red, made from Blaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger, or as Kékfrankos in neighbouring Hungary), Pinot Noir and locally bred varieties such as Zweigelt.

The return of a long time favorite. Best Buy for a truly fine Gruner Veltliner. Stock up now. 2014 was a very good quality year, but very low production.

Bauerl, Gruner Veltliner, Pichl Point Federspiel, 2013

The most unassuming producer in the Wachau (sort of a "Napa Valley" of Austria). Maybe the smallest producer in terms of land area, but not in terms of quality. Johann Bauerl is a man of the earth and his wines are outstanding reflections of the terroir of the vineyards next to the Danube.
