Domaine Desperrier, Southern Burgundy, Moulin-a-Vent, Clos de la Pierre Monople, 2013

Domaine Desperrier, Southern Burgundy, Moulin-a-Vent, Clos de la Pierre Monople, 2013

Those of you who are long time fans of Serge Desperrier may notice a subtle shift in his labeling. The region known as Beaujolais has started to rename itself as "Southern Burgundy". An attempt to get recognition of their fine wines do to the years of being connected to the non-wine silliness of "Beaujolais Nuevo". I hope this works as the wines from this region, especially the "Moulin-a-Vent" district, are outstanding examples of fine food wines and have the potential to age for 8 to 15 years. Most people think "Beaujolais" is a grape, but it is actually the name of the region of Burgundy. The Grape varietal is Gamay and has been on the area since the 15th Century.

Clos de la Pierre is a monopole of about 1 hectare. Small production, hand made, great wine.

The chalky soils of Moulin-a-Vent give the wine a cherry and stone fruit flavors and reduce the natural acid to levels allowing the wine to be consumed now or to age for up to 15 years. My suggestion is buy the older vintages that we have to drink now (do this quickly as they are in short supply) and buy the 2013 and lay it aside for at least two years. You will be well rewarded.

An exceptional buy.
